A Brisbane inner-city uni campus fitout challenge

10 July 2011

Designer and builder successfully joined forces to overcome the challenges of constrained budget and timeline to complete the interior reconstruction of the Central Queensland University’s (CQU) Brisbane campus……

The fit-out of the 8-storey building at 160 Ann Street, Brisbane, cost $6.5million and was completed in February 2011.

Typical educational elements define the building, including lecture theatres, classrooms, computer labs and library.

Brisbane-based building company Quadric and architects Figure & Ground collaborated and adopted an accommodation model that enhanced the floor plan layout in a vertical sense, rather than the traditional, horizontal adjacency of most educational facilities.

Quadric Executive Director Ben Scott praised the design theory.

“Quadric then used innovative joinery solutions, combining natural light, bold colours, and custom-designed furniture, to basically stack spaces on top of each other, to create a layout that maximised the time student and staff would intermingle.

“The result is a very modern, very functional facility that meets the design brief.”

Scott said this collaborative approach between the clients, designer and builder was essential for completing the project.

“Having a cohesive project team is the single most important factor in ensuring a project’s success and CQU’s Brisbane campus is evidence of this effect,” he said.

“This project tested all our expertise, and above all demonstrates the art and value of teamwork.

“We celebrate together with CQU, the transformation of an idea into a built reality.”

Pakistan Flood Relief Fund

Persuaded by news reports and images of suffering during the devastating floods in Pakistan, Quadric staff & directors dug into their pockets to help the relief effort. Quadric staff kindly donated……

……$258.20 to UNICEF, which the company doubled to make $516.40 Thankyou to all involved.

“Despite the enormous scale of the disaster, the situation was not getting much media attention until UNICEF joiner forces with ABC Radio for a radiothon on Friday 27th August. Whether it was the ABC appeal or something else that inspired your donation, on behalf of UNICEF I want toexpress our heartfelt thanks and appreciation. Your donation has helped raise $5.7million to date a tremendous amount over such a short period.

Your donation is making a real difference to children and families in need.

We made a commitment on air that UNICEF would remit the money to the frontline in Pakistan as fast as possible. I am pleased to report we are living up to that commitment. The first million dollars was sent within 48 hours to directly benefit those affected on the ground and we continue to ensure that donations are transferred within days of receipt.

Frankly the needs on the ground in Pakistan require such urgency. More than 20 million people are affected by the crisis including 10 million children, three million of whom are under five. Children are always the most vulnerable in an emergency.

Your donation went directly to supplying safe drinking water, food, shelter and medical supplies: in other words, basic survival needs.

UNICEF – helping the world’s most vulnerable children.

UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s fund was founded almost 65 years ago with a mission to advocate for the protection of children’s rights, to help meet their basic needs and to expand their opportunities to meet their full potential. Each year we respond to over 200 emergencies in the world, including many that never make the headlines.”

Unicef letter of thanks.

Many of the staff & directors at Quadric are ongoing supporters of such NGO’s, and we hope that the company can continue to provide dollar for dollar contributions to causes which meet with the moral objectives of our people.
