Molecular Genetics & Elo Life Systems Lab

Genomics is a rapidly evolving field, critical to cutting-edge health care and personalised medicine. QUT is at the forefront of this discipline with their Genomics Research Centre, a research facility that focuses on the identification of genes involved in common human disorders and the translation of this research into new diagnostics and therapeutics.

How can we feed the world’s skyrocketing population? There will be 9.5 billion people living in the world by 2050 – an increase of more than 2 billion over the next 30 years. Food production will need to double from current levels to meet this demand.  QUT’s Centre for Tropical Crops and Biocommodities (CTCB) is working with food producers to develop essential crops that can thrive in drought, resist disease, and deliver much-needed nutrition to people all over the world.

A new translational research-focused partnership between food security and biotechnology company Elo Life Systems and QUT will offer hope for Australian farmers through the development of more resilient and nutritious crops. Elo Life Systems-Australia, launched this week at QUT’s Gardens Point campus, will use Elo’s genome-editing and multi-scale biology platforms to develop and commercialise protein-rich and nutritionally enhanced crops in collaboration with QUT researchers.  The work will focus on tropical and sub-tropical horticultural and grain crops of relevance to Australia, including pulse legumes such as chickpeas and mung beans.

Elo Life Systems team of creative minds is dedicated to improving human health and wellness through food by working across the value chain, integrating technologies and enabling efficient food production systems.  QUT engaged Quadric to deliver the Molecular Genetics Lab in Q5 at Gardens Point Campus to collaborate with Elo Life Systems to continue their ground breaking work.  Quadric were engaged to deliver the lab on a construct only basis working in conjunction with the designers RAL and the project managers Cadence.  The existing space housed offices and required complete strip out, followed by extensive services rough-in to prepare for it’s proposed use.  Specialist laboratory services and equipment featured heavily in the space.   The laboratory required to be certified to both PC2 and BC2 standards which involved careful consultation with the third party auditors in order to identify and implement correct working procedures to ensure that there were minimal defects at final inspection time.  The project was delivered on time and to a high standard, meeting not only all necessary scientific standards but also to a bespoke quality expected from this joint partnership.

AQIS Forensic and Scientific Services

The Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) is the Australian government agency responsible for enforcing Australian quarantine laws, as part of the Department of Agriculture.
Quadric was engaged on a fixed lump sum basis to refurbish the PC2 / BC2 areas over three stages while the facility remained operational at all times.
To achieve PC2 / BC2 certification, the areas must meet or exceed the regulatory requirements of the Department of Agriculture & Water Resources with respects current Australian Gorverment Departments which administer Bio-Security Standards.
Quadric’s project team carefully managed the detailed refurbishment of the laboratory spaces to ensure complete adherence to the required standards. The spaces exceeded the requirements and achieved compliance first time.
The works involved extensive alterations to mechanical systems which included 15 new fume cupboards, 42 fans, 7 chilled water systems, and laboratory gas and compressed air to be installed into custom medical grade joinery elements.
The works were completed on time and on budget to a very high standard.

Morayfield Health Hub

Quadric was engaged by Uniting Care to create the Morayfield Rehab Centre, following the base building design and construct demolition and refurbishment of an old Bunnings warehouse into a 90 GP medical super clinic and allied health facility by Evans Built.

The project included full fit out of offices, consultation rooms, gym, rehabilitation treatment spaces and pool area.

This base building is the first stage of the $100 million dollar Morayfield Health Hub, with a GP clinic and an urgent care clinic.

The 14,000sq m site at Dickson Rd will have a range of health services including primary and specialist services, allied and oral health services, acute care and day procedures, preventive health and rehabilitation services and diagnostic and medical support.

Health Development Corporations Director Dr Evan Jones and Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Allan Sutherland toured the site to inspect progress.

“The Health Developments Team spent a large amount of time on demographic research around the health needs of the Moreton Bay area,” Dr Jones said.

“By incorporating a fully functional urgent care clinic, general practice, and a large range of allied health services as a predominantly bulk billed service, the health hub is aiming to lead the way, and help set the future standard, for what true patient centred care looks like in Australia.”

Last week Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Allan Sutherland inspected the site

“The health hub will play a vital role in helping meet current and future healthcare needs in a region where the population has grown by more than 12.5 per cent in just the past five years, and will be home to more than 618,000 people in the next two decades — more than a third of which will be aged 50 and over,” he said

“The Morayfield Health Hub will also help to deliver the jobs of the future right here in Morayfield, with more than 300 ongoing jobs expected in healthcare and administration once fully operational, including up to 90 general practitioners. That’s in addition to the 100 building and labouring jobs currently supported on site.”

RT Health Heritage Reconstruction

Located in a group of heritage listed Federation warehouses on Edward Street in Brisbane, the site was purchased by Railway and Transport Health Fund with the view to converting the building into their Queensland home consisting of offices, dental services and future space.

The existing building consisted of 3 timber framed floor levels and basement connected by ramps and staircases added throughout the course of its life, an external steel staircase accessing the rear laneway, exposed timber beam roof structure, and an iconic heritage façade featuring stained glass tinlight windows.  The challenge faced by the project team was to retain the existing building envelope and features whilst upgrading the building to meet the needs of the client in today.  The brief called for 1 additional storey to be added as well as a 4 storey building extension increasing the floor area by 50%.  In order to achieve this, two new 4 storey fire access stairs were constructed with one being DDA compliant and a 9 person passenger lift with associated pit and shaft.  A major passive and active fire services upgrade was implemented in order to bring the existing structure up to code consisting of 2 hour fire rating to all walls, ceilings, posts, and beams, and hydrants, sprinklers, hose reels, and pumps.  Significant steel structures were installed to insert the top level which continued 4 vertical storeys to the basement where new footings independent of the existing building were placed.  The rear laneway façade received a new contemporary curtainwall and finally the front façade received a restoration.

The resulting building is in effect an entirely new construction of a modern and spacious facility sitting inside the bounds of a historical envelope.  The challenges faced by the project team in delivering such a project on a CBD restricted access site are many. Entire sections of upper floors were able to be built prior to the lift and stair core thanks to the creative engineering of temporary scaffolding and propping. This effect became a key factor in ensuring the works was able to be built in a order that would traditionally have been thought of as backwards.  Authority approvals for mains connections of Gas, Power, Communications, Water, and Sewer were successfully navigated by the project team in order to feed the new water, sewer, and fire pump stations, new building distribution board and new mechanical plant. Fitout of RT offices and customer spaces including dental spaces were designed and fitted by Network Building Contractors and interfacing the delivery of fitout with the building reconstruction was key to the project success.

The combined efforts of RT Health, Signature Project Management, Wilde and Woollard Quantity Surveyors, Bokor Architecture, EMF Engineering, Short Structural Engineers, and Quadric as Principal Contractor resulted in a space which has breathed new life in to the century old structure, and sets a benchmark for the preservation of the adjoining warehouses.

This covers four core areas: mental health, physical health, work and study support and alcohol and other drug services.  United Synergies is the lead agency for Headspace Caboolture and through representation from Incite PM, commissioned Quadric to construct the new 375m2 space. As part of the Quadric’s social responsibility strategy named ‘The Quadric Project’, charitable funding was raised in the amount of $10,400.00.  We are proud to be associated with a worthy cause such as this and would like to acknowledge those that participated in the project.  See the full list of participants here. See more about ‘The Quadric Project’.

Southport Health Precinct

The Southport Health Precinct was established to provide the community with a “one stop” centre for the complete health and community service in the heart of Southport.  The brief was to improve community access and service coordination for a range of health services which were previously spread in a wide location across the Gold Coast.  Engaged on a Design and Construct basis, Quadric transformed the building previously vacated by Griffith University into a modern patient-based facility capable of meeting the needs of the rapidly growing Gold Coast Region and assisting with the urban renewal of the area left vacant by the removal of the Gold Coast Hospital.

Services include Oral Health, Renal Dialysis, Children’s Health, Child Mental Health, Alcohol and Drug Services, Sexual Health and Transition Care, along with administrative and health functions including Public Health services.  The build was progressively delivered allowing the facility to have a staged opening, bringing customer operations on board as early as possible.  Upgrading of base building services to meet Queensland Health requirements was a key deliverable, along with meeting infectious control standards to clinical areas.  Specialist services for each clinical space were integrated with the extensive buildwork.  Bespoke joinery suiting operational spaces was design, developed, and built in-house by the Quadric Joinery division. Maintaining end user operations whilst managing the diverse range of services required for such as facility was a key focus of the Quadric team.

A big thank you to the entire project team for working with us on what has been a very challenging but successful build.
